Iberia by James Michener

Unforgettably starting with an unusual breed of cows, worthy of Hercules, towing out barrels full of sea water (to make them float) and bitter oranges, which combined and after a mild sea voyage North, will end up making bitter orange marmalade in Scotland.

The image described so impactfully by James Michener in his book Iberia, published in April 1968 has stuck with me despite the centuries worth of stories, people and places so masterfully described within the book.

Recounting the Author’s travels throughout Spain up until the mid-60’s, Iberia as at once a travel guide as well as marvel of cultural history and fascinating anectodes.
